I did hear what sounded like phasing in the sibilance region of the 2500xвЂ™s signal, but overall this seems neither consistent nor too problematic. For most male voices, though, IвЂ™ve gotta admit that IвЂ™m impressed with the ATR2500xвЂ™s sound. For higher pitch voices, the AT2020 would be the obvious weapon of choice. However, the higher ranges of human speech were brought out a bit more efficiently in the AT2020.

The similarities between the two actually amounted to a pretty shocking difference.

I recorded myself speaking with the mics just over a foot away. Having an Audio-Technica AT2020 USB+ on-hand, I thought a comparison would be appropriate. For a mic designed to record conversation-level voices, and it functions admirably. Its input gain is fixed, but the level of audibility remains fairly ideal with ample headroom. It records audio cleanly, with a wide and fairly unbiased frequency response. The Audio-Technica ATR2500x-USB sounds good. I decided to plug my headphones back into the computer. I didnвЂ™t like hearing myself breathe while I was taking notes for this review in google docs. IвЂ™m a little bummed that no button exists to turn off this feature. Additionally, youвЂ™ll hear your mic signal mixed in at a fixed level. However, I soon realized what would be my single biggest criticism of the mic: the input monitoring.ДЇrom the headphone jack, you can hear the audio output of your connected computer or device. The volume control buttons on the front of the microphone digitally control the computerвЂ™s volume.
